ARITON…Bessie Jewel Sanders Johnson, lovingly known as Bessie, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 31, 2023, in Ozark, Alabama. She was born on July 29, 1937, in Ariton, Alabama. Bessie will be remembered for her nurturing spirit and her unwavering dedication to her family.
             Bessie was a devoted housewife who found joy in caring for her loved ones. She cherished her role as a mother and took great pride in raising her children. Bessie's commitment to her family extended beyond the walls of her home as she lovingly supported her husband Grady, who served as a Police Officer. Her unwavering support was a testament to her strength and devotion.
            Throughout her life, Bessie found solace in simple pleasures. She loved Western Movies that transported her to a different time and place. Being outdoors brought her immense joy, and she found tranquility working in the yard and cutting grass. These activities allowed Bessie to connect with nature and find peace amidst the bustle of everyday life.
          Bessie's family and friends held a special place in her heart. She was preceded in death by her parents R.L. Sanders and Doshia Lee Sanders, along with her husband Grady Johnson. Bessie also mourned the loss of her son John Wayne Johnson, sisters Unis Wilks and Zadie Conklin, and brothers Junior Sanders and Roy Sanders.
       She is survived by her beloved daughter Rita Mann. Bessie's memory will also be cherished by siblings Ferrell Sanders Griffin (Bobby Joe), Edna Sanders Jarmillo (Richard), Foy Sanders, and Cecil Sanders. Her legacy lives on through grandchildren Jerry Bo, Keisha, Sabrina, and Leanna, as well as great-grandchildren Jerry, Gracie, Jennie, and Bradley. Bessie was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren Maggie and Lola, who added a special joy to her later years. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Betty Martin (Gene), Sarah Brazier, and Myrtle Backman.
         The funeral services to honor and celebrate Bessie's life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 3, 2023, in the Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Kenneth Earles officiating. Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 3, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, near Ariton.
         Bessie Jewel Johnson will forever be remembered as a loving mother, devoted housewife, and a pillar of strength for her family. Her kind spirit and nurturing nature touched the lives of all those around her. While we mourn her loss, let us also celebrate the beautiful life she led and the immeasurable impact she had on the lives of others.
